Dolmen de Chantebrault IV

The west-east facing dolmen is the most important of the nine monuments that existed near Chantebrault. It is over ten metres long, two metres wide and consists of fifteen preserved orthostats and two ceiling slabs. It was largely covered by vegetation and was excavated between 2015 and 2018.
The dolmen attracted the curiosity of archaeologists due to its architecture and the original use of stones. This impression was confirmed by architectural and technological studies, which led to the conclusion that only an excavation could confirm the various assumptions. This was done with the support of the French Prehistoric Society (spf).
Chantebrault IV is the first example of a gallery tomb with lateral access south of the Loire. At the same time, the quality and quantity of artefacts found despite the looted excavations are very valuable.
