Cologne - Dasselstrasse

This prestigious old apartment building is located at Dasselstrasse.
This street is named after Rainald von Dassel, who was Archbishop of Cologne and Archchancellor of Italy from 1159 to his death in 1167. Von Dassel was a close adviser the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 1162 he was with Barbarossa´s armee, when after a siege Milan was conquered and looted.
Most important for Cologne was, that in 1164 von Dassel brought the bones of the Three Magi with him to Cologne as loot from Milan and as a gift of Barbarossa. This started a huge pilgrimage to Cologne that went on for centuries. The relics are are still in the Cologne Cathedral.
