The church, dating back to the 12th century, is dedicated to Saint Thomas of Canterbury (aka "Thomas Becket"), what may have been a "political statement", against the House of Plantagenet.

Thomas of Canterbury had been Henry II´s Lord Chancellor, but later he engaged in conflict with Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church. In 1170 he was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. He was canonized already three years later.

Eleonora is indeed a most interesting lady!!

She had been French Queen, when she was married to Louis VII the Younger for 15 years. She bore him two girls, but the marriage was annulled (consanguinity!). Some weeks after the annulment she married Henry Plantagenet, who became Henry II of England. She bore him eight children, but when she later supported her sons in a revolt against their father, Henry imprisoned her for 16 years! She was released after Henry II´s death. She died in 1204 and is buried in the Fontevraud Abbey, where I saw her impressive tomb some time ago.
