I think it was something to do with the production of limestone products the walls are very thick there is another structure close by

It's a vintage cake decoration, with the size of the cat the look on her face is understandable

It took me a while to find out why it was there but it makes sense, it's gritstone someone ordered a trough sooner than struggle getting a boulder off the moor the weight was reduced by doing the work on the moor first the outside then the channel followed by the remainder of the inside but in this case a disaster it cracked, imagine doing all that work perhaps in bad conditions for nothing
