This area is part of the Hellenic volcanic arc, caused by the subduction of the Greek sub-plate under the northward moving African plate. There has been speculation that a volcanic eruption could result if activity continues, although the current crop of 'quakes do not have the full spectrum of vibrations that such precursors usually exhibit.
