Consciousness if a fraud, which requires considerable cooking of the temporal books. But that of course is precisely the point with consciousness: Enormous quantities of information are discarded; what is presented is precisely that which is relevant. For normal consciousness it is utterly irrelevant whether a readiness potential starts half a second before consciousness occurs. What matters is knowing what one has decided to do. Or has felt on one’s skin. What things look like when we open patients’ skulls or get students to flex their finger is pretty unimportant; the important thing is that consciousness occurs when we have discarded all the information we do not need. ~ Page 242
Consciousness is not a superior unit that directs messages down to its subordinates in the brain. Consciousness is the instance of selection that picks and chooses among the many options nonconsciousness offers up. Consciousness works by throwing suggestions out, by discarding decisions proposed by nonconsciousness. Consciousness is discarded information, rejected alternatives -- no, thanks! ~ Page 243
