Gersaint’s Shop, Watteau. In reaction to the rigid and pompous spirit of Louis XIV’s Versailles. Watteau’s paintings captured the grace and informality of aristocratic life during the early reign of Louis XV. Here the viewer steps from the cobblestoned streets directly into Gersaint’s salesroom with its busy assistants and rich patrons. A clerk (left) packs away a portrait of Louis XIV, reflecting the end of an era, while the seductive figures in many paintings on the walls suggest the new rococo frivolity, (Staatliche Museum zu Berlin)
