Young Woman with a Water Jug

Vermeer: Young Woman with a Water Jug The mystery of light fascinated seventeenth century scientists and artists, perhaps, the Dutch painter Vermeer most of all. His calm quiet senses of ordinary people performing everyday tasks in rooms suffused with light has given him the title “poet of domesticity.” The map on the wall suggests curiosity about the wider world. (Metropolitan Museum of Aft, Gift of Henry G. Marquand, 1889)
