Siena si trova nella Toscana centrale al centro di un vasto paesaggio collinare, tra le valli dei fiumi Arbia a sud, Merse a sud-ovest ed Elsa a nord, tra le colline del Chianti a nord-est, la Montagnola ad ovest e le Crete senesi a sud-est. La Torre del Mangia è cosi chiamata poiché dal 1347 al 1360 il Comune dette incarico a tal Giovanni di Balduccio soprannominato “Mangia” o “Mangiaguadagni” (pare che fosse uno scialacquone) di battere le ore; più tardi fu sostituito da un automa che in ricordo del suo primo battitore fu chiamato Mangia. I resti di questo automa oggi sono conservati all'interno del Cortile del Podestà. La torre, simbolo del potere temporale e di eleganza, fu iniziata dai fratelli Francesco e Muccio di Rinaldo nel 1325 e terminata intorno al 1348. È alta 87 metri e ben 102 fino al parafulmine, è in cotto fino al coronamento, sotto la cella campanaria è in travertino; quest'ultima parte è opera di Agostino di Giovanni (scultore senese) su disegno di Lippo Memmi. Nel 1666, dopo vari tentativi di fusione, fu collocata una grande campana che i senesi chiamarono il “Campanone” detta anche “Sunto” perchè dedicata alla Madonna Assunta. Curiosità: pur partendo da una levatura del terreno più bassa, raggiunge la stessa altezza del campanile del Duomo di Siena, questo per simboleggiare il raggiunto equilibrio tra il potere celeste e quello terreno, senza che nessuno dei due superi e si imponga sull'altro.
