Een rij mooi gerestaureerde huizen uit 17e-eeuwse huizen op het Kattenburgerplein op Kattenburg. Dat is wat je zou denken als je deze gevels ziet. Echter, als je goed kijkt, zie je dat het niet klopt. De huizen staan rechtop, de ramen sluiten netjes aan en het ene pand staat net zo hoog als het pand ernaast. Het is te netjes. Het is te mooi om waar te zijn. En dat is het ook.

Het aangeplempte eiland Kattenburg in Amsterdam bestond tot aan de jaren 1960 uit twee delen: een deel voor het rijk met het Marineterrein en het huidige Scheepvaartmuseum, en een deel wat zeer dicht bebouwd was met smalle, kleine huizen en nog smallere straten. De verkrotting sloeg hier hard toe.
In de jaren 1960 zijn dan ook alle huizen gesloopt en vervangen door galerijflats en een studentenflat. Ook de huizen op de foto zijn toen gebouwd. Als herinnering aan de oude huizen. Gebouwd in 1970.

The Sunday Challenge: fake

A row of beautifully restored 17th-century houses on the Kattenburgerplein (Kattenburg Square) on Kattenburg in Amsterdam. That's what you would think when you see these façades. However, if you look closely, you'll see that it's not right. The houses stand completely upright, the windows fit very neatly and every house is just as high as the one next to it. It is too neat. It is too good to be true. And it is.

Until the 1960s, the constructed island of Kattenburg in Amsterdam consisted of two parts: one in for the country, with the Marineterrein (Naval area) and the present Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime museum), and one that was very densely built up with narrow, small houses and even narrower streets. The area was hit hard by dilapidation and people lived in slums.
In the 1960s, all the houses were demolished and replaced by gallery flats and a student flat. The houses in the photo were also built then. As a reminder of the old houses. Built in 1970.
