Marken is one of the most visited tourist sights in the Netherlands. It is a former island in the so called 'Zuiderzee'. Marken is well-known for its characteristic green coloured wooden houses, pictoresque harbour and traditional costumes.
The 'Wilhelminabrug' - ca. 1850 - is one of the five wooden drawbridges in Marken and is situated in the 'Kerkbuurt' (Church Area), with the Protestant Church (1904).

The Sant Climent de Taüll is Romanesque church, consecrated on the 10th of December 1123.
It is one of the nine Early Romanesque churches in the Boí Valley on the World Heritage list of the Unesco.

Construction of the Great Mosque of Córdoba started in 798 by Abd al-Rahman I. The building is considered being the most beautiful expression of Islamic art in Spain. It was the place of worship for the rulers of the western Islamic empire Al-Andalus. The so called Mezquita is a jewel of Hispano-Islamic art with its 850 columns, double arches and Byzantine mosaics.
In the year of 1236 Córdoba was conquered by Fernando III and the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral. The cathedral canons ordered in 1523 the center of the mosque pulled down to make way for a gothic transept and apse, later embellished with renaissance decorations and in the mid-18th century baroque choir stalls and pulpits.

The St. Gerlachuskerk is one of the most famous Dutch places of pilgrimage. And even in this days there are about 30.000 pilgrims a year visiting the church and especially the tomb of St. Gerlach who lived in Houthem in the 12th century. He died in 1164 or 1165.
The St. Gerlachus Church has a baroque interior.

Nederland - Kerk van Ferwoude

The church of Ferwoude (Ferwâlde) has been plastered in remarkable bright colours.
The oldest parts date back from the second half of the 13th century. Reports tell that the church and tower were demolished in 1762 to sell the tuff stones to the cement industry in Makkum. The present church was built in 1767.
