World Photography Day 2024 (Blue Leanie)

Hopefully, I did correctly read that it's okay to add photos to 'World Photography Day' until the end of August as long as the photo was taken on 19th :-) On 19th it was quite dull and overcast and I thought I would wait until the sun made an appearance before heading out. It wasn't looking promising so late in the afternoon I walked into town hoping the light would be okay. I was struggling to find a subject and realised the, so called, 'Blue Leanie' building was undergoing alteration/renovation and I thought I ought to be able to find a photo opportunity here. I'm sure there are better photo opportunities here once the alterations/renovation are complete and I will be trying more shots when all is complete and the sun shines :-))) Part of the complex does lean at an acute angle hence the 'Blue Leanie' title but clearly not this section that I photographed:-)

Extract from Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_College,_Oxford ~ "New College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1379 by Bishop William of Wykeham in conjunction with Winchester College as New College's feeder school, New College was one of the first colleges in the university to admit and tutor undergraduate students. The college is in the centre of Oxford, between Holywell Street and New College Lane (known for Oxford's Bridge of Sighs). Its sister college is King's College, Cambridge. The choir of New College has recorded over one hundred albums, and has won two Gramophone Awards." Happy Fence Friday, All Bridge of Sighs/Hertford College, Oxford. Link below is an extract from Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_Sighs,_Oxford "Hertford Bridge, often called the Bridge of Sighs, is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane in Oxford, England. Its distinctive design makes it a city landmark. The bridge is often referred to as the Bridge of Sighs because of its supposed similarity to the better known Bridge of Sighs in Venice. There is a false legend saying that many decades ago, a survey of the health of students was taken, and as Hertford College's students were the heaviest, the college closed off the bridge to force them to take the stairs, giving them extra exercise. However, if the bridge is not used, the students actually climb fewer stairs than if they do use the bridge. The building on the southern side of the bridge houses the college's administrative offices, whereas the northern building is mostly student accommodation. The bridge is always open to members of the college, who can often be seen crossing it." I know there is a song called "Bridge of Sighs" but for Sight and Sound I have decided upon a link to The Bridge" by Elton John :-) Added to Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ Listen here ~ The Bridge - Elton John

Happy Fence Friday, All. This is Nuffield College in Oxford. The College was founded by Lord Nuffield (born William Richard Morris in 1877). He was a British motor manufacturer, the founder of Morris Motors Limited, who has been described as one of Britain's greatest philanthropists. He took his title, Lord Nuffield, from the village of Nuffield, Oxfordshire where he lived. Apparently, the tower was originally planned to be ornamental but was then redesigned to hold the college's library. It was the first tower built in Oxford for 200 years and is about 150 feet (46 m) tall, including the flèche on top.

Happy Fence Friday, All Sheldonian Theatre & Clarendon Building, Oxford. Extracts from Wikipedia - "Sheldonian Theatre, located in Oxford, England, was built from 1664 to 1669 after a design by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford. The building is named after Gilbert Sheldon, Warden of All Souls College and later chancellor of the University. Sheldon was the project's main financial backer. The theatre is used for music concerts, lectures and University ceremonies, but not for drama until 2015 when the Christ Church Dramatic Society staged a production of The Crucible by Arthur Miller." "The Clarendon Building designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor was built between 1711 and 1715. It was built to house the Oxford University Press. In 1829 the University police took over part of it as their police station with cells in the basement. It only became known as the Clarendon Building after it was adapted by the University for use as a registry in 1832. It continued as the university registry until the present University Offices were opened in Wellington Square in 1975. The Clarendon Building was then taken over by the Bodleian Library."
