Happy Fence Friday, All.
Autumn in Croome, Worcestershire.
This time a view of the house, Croome Court.
Just a little bit bigger than my house methinks :-)))
From the National Trust -
"The 6th Earl set about transforming the original red brick, 17th-century house of his ancestors, but he didn’t knock it down, perhaps for reasons of economy or sentiment. Instead, he used it as a template, altering and refacing it in the Palladian style, using the old foundations and keeping some of the walls that form the central spine of the house. That is why, unlike many other Palladian mansions, the House at Croome does not occupy a commanding position up on high ground, such as where the church now stands. New turreted wings were added at each end and a magnificent Palladian portico was built on the southern side. Traces of the original building can still be seen inside and the chimneystacks from the older building are visible above the roof."

The darker bit of the photo at the top is part of the Malvern Hills.
From the National Trust -
"A family home (this is out of my shot to the left), RAF Defford airbase, Catholic boys’ school and UK headquarters for Hare Krishna, the history of Croome is a rich and varied one."
"Unbeknown to many at the time, the Croome estate housed RAF Defford during the Second World War that became the main station in Britain for the development of airborne radar during and after the Second World War. The experiments and developments carried out at Defford were of great historic significance, for they played a vital part in helping the Allies to win the war and paved the way for many electronic applications that we now take for granted."

Taken just before sunrise in Stowe Landscape Gardens.
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death August and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
For The Fallen

I am reviewing some old photos and I don't think this one was ever posted to ipernity. If anyone does see it anywhere on ipernity please let me know :-)
Quite often when I look at my old photos that are buried away on portable hard drives I think to myself "Perhaps I could make some minor adjustments/improvements here" :-)
I decided to make some minor adjustments to this photo. Changed the exposure setting, changed the crop a bit, and added some more soft focus.
Finding it hard to believe that this shot was taken some 13 years ago :-)
Not at all sure where it was taken although it's possible it was at a Steam Fayre. I do seem to remember it was intended to be a candid shot but the lady was clearly aware of the camera so I don't think that, by any stretch of the imagination, I could call it 'candid' :-)

Palladian Bridge, Stowe Landscape Gardens.
I don't know if I could say there is a "concrete fence" here that is part of the bridge. But, if not, there is a small bit of a proper fence by the folks walking towards the bridge :-))
Maybe view Large, please :-)
There is actually water that flows under the bridge so I will also add this to 'Sight & Sound'. Have used "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel a couple of times so have chosen instead a cover version by Jadyn Rylee & Sina.

These farm buildings are kind of within the grounds of Stowe Landscape Gardens. But, I don't know if they are the responsibility of the National Trust or whether they are privately owned. Have been searching the Internet to try and find out but, so far, not having any success :-(

"Worcester College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. The college was founded in 1714 by the benefaction of Sir Thomas Cookes, 2nd Baronet (1648–1701) of Norgrove, Worcestershire, whose coat of arms was adopted by the college. Its predecessor, Gloucester College, had been an institution of learning on the same site since the late 13th century until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Founded as a men's college, Worcester has been coeducational since 1979".
In recent times it has been rare to be able to visit Worcester College but, thankfully, the College was open to the public on 15 September as part of the 'Oxford Open Doors' celebration. Took lots of photos and quite a few of them were of Worcester College :-)

Bulbourne Yard
Extract from the Canal & River Trust -
"Bulbourne Yard – The Future
Bulbourne Yard on the Grand Union Canal near Tring is an important historic site on the canal network comprising a unique collection of canalside workshops, offices and dwellings. The site was historically used for the construction of lock gates and other waterway infrastructure. However the layout, configuration and access to the buildings were designed predominantly for manual working with small workshops and low ceiling heights. The decision was made in 2003 to relocate production to more modern workshops at Stanley Ferry and Bradley that could accommodate mechanised production and provide better access to larger vehicles. Therefore the Canal & River Trust (the Trust) do not see any operational use or need for the buildings in the future. The site is now largely disused, many of the buildings themselves are in a poor state of repair and require significant investment to ensure they are preserved for the future."
I hadn't visited this area for quite a while and when I visited just recently
(18 September 2024) I was stunned to find there had clearly been significant investment because the whole area has been completely transformed and now includes some impressive housing too. The nearby pub (Junction Arms) has also been given an impressive makeover. I had the car with me so I couldn't have any alcoholic refreshments :-(
Just had to be content with a diet Coke and a bag of crisps :-) Was also impressed with the pub menu so may well go back for more photography and have a proper snack too :-)
