Autumn in Waddesdon Manor

Autumn in Waddesdon Manor
On 1 October I was walking towards the Manor and could see in the grass just below the Parterre what I thought might be Snowdrops. But, then I thought "Surely Snowdrops are a first sign of Spring?" :-)

According to the Waddesdon Manor Facebook pages these are Colchicums more commonly known as Autumn Crocuses.

CORRECTION
Have spoken to gardeners at Waddesdon Manor and these should simply be referred to as Colchicum :-)

Excellent shot of these crocuses that aren't crocuses at all. Quite liked the song even though it's a far cry from what I normally like. Maybe I need to be less dogmatic in my tastes!

Hello Andy. "Not Crocuses"........what are they, please? Good that I have introduced you to a song that you "Quite Like" :-) I have the cd of this concert and it's one I play quite often :-)

Hi Roger. Autumn crocuses belong to a different family altogether but I forget which. They do bear a resemblence to the spring crocuses we know and love. I know this because I was surprised to see carpets of them on my autumn walks in the Mountains of Madrid and looked them up at the time..

An autumn delight. The most common color fro autumn crocuses is amethyst. These are unusual.

I was getting a bit confused the actual species here so I spoke to some of the gardeners at Waddesdon Manor. They said that these should just be referred to as Colchicum :-)

They really stand out, your exposure is perfect!
The white variety is new to me, I only know the violet colchicums which can be seen everywhere in our area now (they are poisonous),

Roger Bennion club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you very much, Gudrun. I should think violet ones must be most striking. Will try and find out if violet ones can be found in this part of the world :-) Thanks for the warning that they are poisonous!!
