My Great Great Grandfather, Edwin Maximilian Hellyer's indenture certificate - 1835.
He was to eventually become a Master Mariner, and then die in 1853 in Australia, leaving a wife and unborn baby son back in England.

Signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours. This and the photo of your husband's GG uncle in the army at age 12 are chilling reminders of the difficult lives of children in the 19th century. More sobering is the knowledge that this type of thing is still common in many countries. What a great piece of family history.

It happened more recently than the 19th century, in England. My mother's brother started his apprenticeship at 14, (1934) where his father had also started - probably even younger than that. For a working class family, apprenticeships led to good careers - and , in fact, with the unions being strong back then, a lifetime of decent wages and benefits.
The majority of 14 year olds back then probably had vey little to do with making their own career decisions, though.
Sadly, the present exploitation doesn't even lead to a decent living, in most cases.
