Vermont Basketball Team 1905/06

I assume this is a basketball team.
The men are unknown except for the man on the left in the back row - that's Ernest Illingworh, husband of Ada Grimshaw.

(My husband's grandparents.) His family emigrated from Engalnd to Bellows Falls, Vermont about eight miles south of Springfield. I think Ernest is in his early twenties here but they are wearing the Springfield High School "S" so I'm puzzled by that.

Deborah, Apa went to school at Vt Academy, in Saxton's River. I wonder if this is from there?
Deborah Lundbech 14y
But isn't that the Springfield H.S. "S'?
I've got to find some old yearbooks from Springfield High because I think maybe people from the Halkard/Grimshaw album are in there. Several of those people have this emblem on their collars but I assumed it was Springfield.
i also think he would be too old in this for V. A. He must be at least 21 here.
I actually just read a few things from the Vermont Academy yearbook, including this unbelievably offensive essay on keeping America free of "morally depraved immigrants"!

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith at the University of Kansas: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Naismith,
An early bball team: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kansas_U_team_1899.jpg, these guys have pants more like we think of football and solid color socks, but your photo is 15 years after the sport started, so maybe they got fancier. It looks like a basketball, not a soccer ball... Great photo to have, and wonderful that you know the history.
