Nice, but could do with a top crop.

It was taken with a (now) 60-year-old camera with a fixed focal length lens. I've cropped it as much as possible, at the expense of some image quality.

It was taken at around 8am in November. That's much earlier than I'm normally out and about (and the best photo opportunities, most of which I normally miss, are often in early morning) but this was the view from the dining room of the hotel, and I left Shirley sitting at the breakfast table while I rushed back to the bedroom to get the Leica.

Re your note: the sun needs to be HIGH in the frame, because it is the glory of the heavens shining DOWN on the valley below. The main focus of the picture is the effect of the sunlight as it emerges from the bank of grey cloud. We do not need to see above the sun to other clouds that have no relevance to the scene.

Sorry, but it won't take any more cropping. There's only so much in a 35mm negative. If it had been taken on a modern digital camera with a zoom (or slightly longer prime) lens, a better result both in image quality and composition would have been possible.

Yes, it is a shame. But if I ever get another chance to take a similar picture, I will, and it will be better, and you can fave that.

I wasted an hour this evening re-scanning the negative in the vain hope of getting a better result. But the negative is very flat - the scene was much mistier than it appears in the photograph. With better luck there'd have been a puff of wind to clear the mist momentarily.

Used to be the most-traveled perhaps, but I haven't quitted these shores for over 3 years. But all being well, on Sunday I'm going to Venice on a 3-night group photographic holiday. How successful it'll be will be very weather-dependent, and that's in the lap of the gods.

You don't need to quit these shores to be well travelled.
I hope the trip to Venice is more successful than the one to Somerset.

Thanks. It ought to be, but within limits. I've been to Venice several times (the last occasion was on my honeymoon in 2011) and have taken about every takeable scene and view there, albeit only with a film camera and none of the pictures are great - www.flickr.com/photos/14463685@N07/albums/72157602356397787. But the group tour will be led by a professional photographer who will know parts of the city and islands which I didn't come across, and (weather permitting) will take us there at the best times of day for photography.

I think you said something similar about Somerset. A professional can take you to the silk places, but only you can make a sow's ear of them.

The weather forecast for Venice is mixed, and I'm going with realistic expectations. My expectations for the Somerset trip were low (it was in the middle of a prolonged drought), and relative to those it was actually quite successful, even if my pictures were rubbished.

How is the book coming along?

Serendipity, my friend. If you just catch some nice scenes, instead of contriving to do your "art", then the weather shouldn't matter too much. I doubt you'll get any frost, though.
