The Witness - 20 October 2018

At first sight, during a drive on North Miami Avenue, this was a considerable and unexplained surprise. Standing on waste ground between NE 22nd Street and NE 23rd Street and now inside a fenced area clearly marked for inevitable development, it was possible to photograph only over or through the fence. Determined to research this find, the internet didn't let me down.

'The Witness' was created by the Oaxacan artist Alberto Aragon Reyes and originally displayed during the 2017 Art Week with a piece called 'The Fisherman'. Together they were a work called 'Metamorfosis/Metamorphosis' designed to bring attention to the subject of rising sea levels. The pieces are made from concrete, with an additive donated by ECOncrete Tech, which will allow them to be submerged and attract and encourage marine life.
