A Gate for a Gate - 31 March 2014

One of my many self-imposed photographic tasks is to slowly paint a picture of Southampton as I see it which necessarily involves intermittent work and being selective. There are some absolutely fascinating sights in this historic city. My June 2013 photograph of the Old Bond Store, which is one of my favourite buildings, shows a black gate which has been replaced by the remarkable sculpture shown in this picture.The work is in brick and incorporates recycled glass bottles. It is inscribed as follows (with capitalisation as it appears):

The East Gate stood along this wall north of here from 1200 1765

The metal crafts Guild defended the gate.
