La Garita - 5 March 2014

'La Garita' in Spanish means 'sentry box'. This is just one example above Paseo del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The remaining fortifications on the island, of which El Morro is perhaps the most intimidating, are very impressive and worth some minutes of reflection as one looks out across centuries of history. The original fortifications took 250 years to construct in defence of the then worldwide Spanish might.
