Paseo del Morro - 5 March 2014

The fortifications of El Morro are very impressive as perhaps they should be after 250 years of construction. 'El Morro' means 'the headland' in Spanish and this, at the entrance to the safe, deep-water harbour of San Juan, Puerto Rico was of great importance to the Spanish and coveted by many attackers including the English and the Dutch.

Las Garitas - 5 March 2014

'La Garita' in Spanish means 'sentry box'. These are two examples above Paseo del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The remaining fortifications on the island, of which El Morro is perhaps the most intimidating, are very impressive and worth some minutes of reflection as one looks out across centuries of history. The original fortifications took 250 years to construct in defence of the then worldwide Spanish might.

On a visit to San Juan's impressive Castillo San Felipe del Morro, my photography was frustrated by the crowds. I was, however, captivated by the beautiful iguanas basking on the fortifications. This short series features two of the animals.
