Bliss Dance (1) - 17 November 2013
'Bliss Dance' (2010) by Marco Cochrane is a sculpture of remarkable grace on Treasure Island, San Francisco. I photographed it by day, on a beautiful day, but it is known for being lit at night (internally and externally) and there are many beautiful photographs elsewhere on Flickr. This first picture in the series might seem a bit clumsy but I have included it intentionally to allow us to reflect upon how grace can emerge from real life. The cherry-picker was in exactly the wrong position for most full length photographs of the sculpture. It should be possible, for example, to include the Golden Gate Bridge in the background but was not on this occasion. You might also note an access panel hanging from a leg. The piece has not fared well in the open air and an appeal is in hand to allow it to be weatherproofed. The rest of the series, which extends to b&w images focuses on the undeniable grace of Cochrane's sculpture in detail.
