Station 48 (1) - 17 November 2013

When we were driving round Treasure Island, CA we came across the firefighters of San Francisco Fire Department Station 48 doing drills. Station 48 is at building 157 on Avenue D at 10th Street.

The Roof Fell In - 17 November 2013

Although my main work from Treasure Island this trip was 'Bliss Dance' [qv], the buildings on the island would make an album in their own right. On this occasion, the light was not right for many of the Naval Station relics and, although many were neglected, none was quite as dramatically ruined as this.

Knitted Elephants (3) - 17 November 2013

This is one of those things you just see. We were driving around the streets of Treasure Island and, right there, on Avenue H were three knitted elephants on a trailer.

What Am I? - 17 November 2013

On a less dramatic scale than 'Bliss Dance' [qv], this charming sculpture on Treasure Island, with its rather generic anatomy, did leave me wondering 'dolphin or sea lion'? Perhaps the latter is more likely as the honking of sea lions is a familiar sound around San Francisco Bay.

Google Barge (2) - 17 November 2013
28 Nov 2013 |
|
In October and November of 2013 the appearance (or development) of the 'Google Barge' at Treasure Island, CA caused fevered speculation as to its purpose. Another was being constructed at Portland, Maine. Subsequent news articles did little to resolve the mystery which I suspect Google was corporately enjoying. You could choose between a 'technology exhibition space', a 'floating data centre', or a 'high-tech floating learning centre'. It has also been described as 'an unprecedented artistic structure' intended to 'drive visitation to the waterfront'. Such hyperbole from the technology sector might suggest a certain detachment from knowledge of other artistic structures. Looking more functional than artistic during construction, the California barge is seen here at Pier 1, Treasure Island Marina.

Naval Station Treasure Island (2) - 17 November 20…

Treasure Island is a man-made landform in San Francisco Bay dating from 1936 and its varied sights are a treasure trove for the photographer. My earlier photographs featured the sculpture 'Bliss Dance'. The most striking building on the island is the main building of the former Naval Station (closed 1997) with dramatic architecture reminiscent of a small-scale Tempelhof or the Long Beach or Burbank airports.

Bliss Dance (8M) - 17 November 2013

'Bliss Dance' (2010) by Marco Cochrane is a sculpture of remarkable grace on Treasure Island, San Francisco. I photographed it by day, on a beautiful day, but it is known for being lit at night (internally and externally) and there are many beautiful photographs elsewhere online. The piece has not fared well in the open air and an appeal is in hand to allow it to be weatherproofed. This series, especially the b&w images, focuses on the undeniable grace of Cochrane's sculpture in detail.
