Dennis Kamakahi's Hands on Guitar

04 Aug 2007 6 643
We had the great experience of attending a concert by father and son Hawaiian musicians, Dennis and David Kamakahi. This concert took place in 2007 during the day at a shopping mall on Maui. Musicians and dancers often perform in these venues. We were able to get some good photos of the event. Sadly, Dennis Kamakahi passed away in 2014. See: swansonphotos.com/kamakahi.html These images remind me of their duet of "Ulili E" from the album "Ohana". And the song plays on... www.amazon.com/Dennis-Kamakahi/e/B000AQ1L7K/ref=ntt_mus_dp_pel

Monument Valley Highway

21 Apr 2014 25 11 615
A pretty famous stretch of road. There were many folks pulled over to the side to take photos. Some of the more adventuresome were lying on their backs on the center line of the highway, trying to get dramatic perspective. Anyway, I had to get some pictures as I drove this stretch of road, too.

Alcan Highway

Taken along the "golden triangle" in Yukon. This is the famous AlCan Highway, built during WW II. This photo was taken in 2000, during our visit to Alaska and the surrounding area. Scanned from color print using GIMP.

Almost Huge Moon

07 Dec 2017 9 523
Taken as a test of a 300mm lens on the Panasonic Lumix GX85 (effective 600mm). Hand-held. This was taken in Arizona the day after a "maximum moon", so it is "almost huge". This is more interesting to me, because you can see shadows of craters, etc, which are not so clear in a full-on completely lit moonface. Processed with GIMP. Lunar Eclipse Composite

14 Apr 2014 7 2 521
Series of photos taken with the Nikon D700 and 300mm telephoto, hand-held. This lunar eclipse was seen from Prescott, Arizona on a lovely, cold, night. Composite created with GIMP. (be sure to view on black and at full-sized) More photos at: swansongrp.com/P/p/night_narrative/index.html

2017 Solar Eclipse at Totality

22 Aug 2017 5 2 476
Taken with the Panasonic Lumix GX85 at full 140mm telephoto, hand-held. (with Micro 4/3ds it is half-frame, so the 35mm equivalent here would be a 280mm telephoto) I used the same lens and camera settings when we experienced the April 2024 eclipse repeat in the USA.

1898 Map of Alaska Showing Panhandle Area

08 May 2020 6 8 397
Scan of a map printed in 1898. Note the areas marked with red, they are the gold fields of the 1898 rush. This map shows Sitka as the capital; it was later moved to Juneau. I have had the pleasure of cruising these passages on the Alaska State Ferry (and a few cruise ships, too). Just some of the maps I have online (for Sunday Challenge too!) PiP for another detail of the Inside Passage area.

Scan of a map printed in 1898. Notice the markings showing "coal" areas. The map was created during the Klondike Gold Rush, so it also shows the gold areas. Note in the upper right a shaded gold area above Telegraph Creek in British Columbia.

Lanai Sunset

05 May 2020 11 8 469
We lived on Maui for 10 years. During that time, we lived in a house facing east. So we saw (and photographed) a lot of sunrises, some of them other-worldly. However, we rarely saw any sunsets on Maui. Many visitors to the island rave about the magnificent views they get on the west side of the island. Well, we DID get a few sunset photos, primarily while visiting friends on the other side. This is a sunset over the island of Lana'i. Some sunrise photos at: swansonphotos.com/picture_gallery.html
