PS, sorry for late reply, had a very busy week at work!
I have travelled in one such train, not a joy ride, but 550 miles in about 24 hours. Even now I remember the smell of coal. These ceased operation in 1970s
And there were Broad Gauge, Meter gauge, and narrow gauge -- the last one only hilly regions with speed of 15 mph!
