The first time I heard that music was in the summer of 1959. I was studying engineering at the time, and we had to spend one summer in the 'field" doing "practical work". I spent that summer at the (now apparently defunct) Ferranti transformer factory in Hollinwood in Oldham. I rented a room from a wonderful young couple in Manchester. They had a non-working radio in the room which I repaired and used. Each morning the BBC used to play the piece as a signature tune for some program. Only much later did I find out what it was.
