Those arches look super. I love the colour of the stonework - I should think it would have been difficult for transport in and out of the city when the Atletico de Madrid played there

This has been a footbridge for a long time. I doubt it has been a major route in or out Madrid for at least a century. Different in the past of course! This was then one of only two major bridges. Much better to control the taxation of goods in and out of the city!

That a really heavy duty bridge............was the Manzanares a much bigger river than it is now?

No, it's seasonal, Keith.
Occasionally in full spate with snow melt in the spring. Even though well managed now, the seasonal difference is still marked with there being merely a trickle in late summer and autumn.
