West Thumb Geyser Basin

Traveling down the east side of Yellowstone National Park from the east entrance to the south entrance, the last stop is the West Thumb Geyser Basin just north of the junction with the south entrance road. The name, West Thumb, refers to the western bay of Yellowstone Lake visible in this photo. The West Thumb area is unique because it is on the shore of Yellowstone Lake and some of the features are actually in the water of the lake. These photos are taken across the geyser basin and towards the lake with the Bighorn Mountains in the distance and this photo is of the hot water Abyss Pool draining into the lake.
