Grand Haven South Pier

These are a few more photos from an excursion to Grand Haven, Michigan, with my youngest brother. It was a wet, cold and windy night but when the lights on the pier's catwalk came on we forgot our discomfort. In this photo I waited until the lights on both lighthouses, inner and outer, were shining in my direction and tried, too, to catch the reflections on the lights in the wet surface of the pier. The pier and lighthouses have been turned over to the city of Grand Haven by the US government and the catwalk with its lights have been recently restored and relit.

HFF & HWE !
Have a nice weekend my friend ;-)
Now, to reply to all of your wonderful commentary! :)
Loved what you had to say about the Pinecone Ginger...I have another picture that's almost identical but the butterfly isn't there. I'd spotted the weird thing when we first wandered around the enclosure and took a bunch of pictures. Later on I came back around and noticed a butterfly was there. What fun to get them both in the picture. And I have to agree, that is a very odd and interesting plant. Also agree with...how n the world did they figure out what was edible and what was ... SHAMPOO?!!! *scratches my head in wonder* I laughed at your hypothesis for how the uses were discovered...it's a likely story! :D Oh, and your hilarious commen, "You could be eating and washing your hair at the same time! and all out in the jungle.
HAH! You are as silly as I am! :D *high five*
On the other hand, it is chilling to think about poisonous plants and how they discovered what was or was not toxic. All of that stuff fascinates me to no end--the medicinal purposes of plants is amazing...HOW do they ever learn such things? It's really incredible. When you start blending shamanism and all of that business, it gets downright crazy. Especially because a lot of that stuff actually works...*scratches head again with a most quizzical expression on my face*
I'm so happy that I've inspired you! That's really cool...and isn't it neat that you can go out and take pictures in the same darn place you've taken a zillion pictures in the past and it's possible to come up with more wonderful keepers?! I have to remind myself from time to time of that, and I always surprise myself with the truth of that, even when I've convinced myself there's no way I'll find anything interesting or different. :) Photography really is a bottomless cornucopia of possibilities. :) I look forward to seeing what you came up with! :)
Holy toledo...I looked up shakshuka and it's just so NOMMY looking! In fact...maybe I'll get out of this chair and make it for a surprise brunch for Steve! There's a glorious keto version that looks incredible!
Sounds like Neal had a fun time with Halloween, what a fun costume. Heh, no experimenting on mom or dad! :D Too funny. And yes, we live rurally so no trick or treaters here.
Ok, well, I'm going to see about this recipe! I'll be back later with more commentary! :)
und gute weitere Bilder.
Freundliche Grüße und ein schönes Wochenende
Erich
Beautifully captured, Ron!
I have never made poached eggs before so of course they turned out hard-boiled but who cared? What a delicious dish! And now we have a new delicious breakfast to make that's fast, easy and different than our usual bacon and eggs or an omelet, etc. :) Oh, and Steve was delighted at the surprise and totally loved it. I knew he would, we both love tangy tomato dishes and there's no way we wouldn't love something with chorizo, eggs, onion and garlic! :D Thank you for the inspiration!
Another comment about Halloween: it used to be my favorite holiday by far, Christmas didn't come close. I loved the costumes, the anticipation, and of course, drawing up the running route my brothers and I would take around the neighborhood! Always designed in a figure 8 pattern in order to dump FULL PILLOW SACKS of candy and run out again for more before it got dark! Literally, we'd have a full pillow sack of candy by night's end and mom and dad would pull out some treats for themselves as we sorted our treasures on the living room floor. Only a couple of times did we get weird/questionable things, and they just went into the garbage. I would then hide my treasure away from my --> STUPID <-- brothers (HAH!) and would then nibble on my candy sparingly so that by the time Halloween had arrived again, I was finishing my bag of candy! EEEEWWWW, right?! LOL, I made sure to eat the things that would go stale first, so at the end were just hard candies and such. Crazy kid! :D
More comments! Loved what you said about blue morphos. I really enjoyed the links you included and I'm glad you got the chance to see these stunning butterflies. You are right--no matter how good the picture, they cannot do justice to the real thing. I admit to being very surprised that there are so many species! I'm always wiping egg off my face for the assumption of just one or two species of whatever, only to be blown away the the high number! I am extremely envious that you have occasional access to a butterfly house when you are visiting your kids. What a nice trip to take when you go! :)
I am not surprised you are so interested in bromiliads, that's another surprise when I went looking for identification and discovered there are so many kinds. Likewise, crotons...same deal: so many species, so many interesting and beautiful varieties. It seems like the world is just bursting with cool and interesting plants to grow and appreciate.
That reminds me of the time, a zillion years ago, when I found a website that sells houseplant seeds of all sorts. (http://www.seedman.com/) They offered Philodendron Monstera seeds and I thought, why not try? I got 5 seeds and of all the luck, one of them actually sprouted and grew! To this day--about 25 years later, I still have that plant! It never grew large because it's always lived in water, but what a totally cool thing to do. I am always tickled when I see it. And now a-days I'm even more surprised because it can be next to impossible to grow stuff from seed unless you jump through a bunch of complicated hoops! (BTW, if you were interested in Monstera seeds, they aren't on Seedman's site right now but are easily found elsewhere)
Thanks for the info on Starwalk, that seems like something I might be able to get Steve interested in at some point. I like that sort of thing too but it's not something I usually think about. I'll have to suggest the idea to Steve--he enjoys more technical photography and maybe this would spark an interest to delve into photography with a passion! :)
Finally, ty for the kudos on my #1 picture on Explore! :) It's always a nice surprise when it happens, though I'm pleased if my picture makes it somewhere on the first page of 27 spots! And my desire there is merely the hope that my picture will interest the viewer enough to click on it, and then to hopefully enjoy the insets...and best of all if it makes them forget current worries, or else to make them smile and become inspired themselves. :)
Ok, I see you left me a new comment--I've been hitting the jackpot! :D But I will visit a picture of yours in a bit and leave my comment reply there! :) You're the best! Please tell Nancy I said hello and ask her if she wouldn't mind if I went around her new lawn with my metal detector and dug big holes looking for treasure! Heh...I think I know her opinion...:D
