Mute Swan

Mute Swan
The mute Swan is not native to North America but has been introduced from Europe and Asia and has established itself especially in the eastern USA and Canada. Indeed, it has established itself so well that in some areas it is considered a nuisance, not only for its numbers but also for its agressiveness. We realized this on our recent trip to Michigan when we saw these swans on nearly every lake and pond.

Although this species was once not native to America, it is still of great grace and beauty. Excellent capture, Ron!

They are elegant birds, but if they are ousting native species from the environment, then maybe they need to be culled. We have problems with the non-indigenous grey squirrels, which can be a real pest. I know that they have been severely culled in Edinburgh's Botanic gardens, but the children do love seeing them there and feeding them too.
