Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park
This is where we were yesterday. We left Washington early on the 15th and drove fourteen hours to Rapid City, South Dakota, where we spent the night. The next morning we drove to the Badlands and spent most of the day there before driving on through the night to Michigan, another sixteen hours of driving, arriving this morning. We stopped often in the park, not only for the scenery but for the wildlife and had a fabulous day. The weather started overcast but soon cleared in part and the opportunities for photos were many. This was taken at Yellow Mounds Overlook.

A sensational landscape. The different colours of the earth at the different heights are particularly impressive ... What's the reason for the name Badlands ?

They are called "badlands" because of the rugged terrain and lack of water and vegetation.

I love the colours of the rocks in this region, Ron. It's all very dramatic and huge. If we drove for 16 hours in one direction here we'd be in the sea. ;-)

What a desolate and dramatic place. I'd hate to have to cross it like the pioneers did. It is stunning to see, though.
