Termite Mound

Termite Mound
This photo was taken along the Davies Creek Road in Dinden National Park, but we saw these all over the drier areas of the Atherton Tablelands. This was an area that had been burned over but that did not seem to affect the insects living in the mounds.

In Africa, they were broken with stones ( is is a very hard mix of the ant´s saliva and red sand) and the resulting powder was then mixed with water to be hand plastered on the wall of the huts to make them wind and weather proof. Good picture, Ron.
