Bush Lupine

I had this identified as the Spur Lupine, Lupinus arbustus. The only other possibility I could come up with was a hybrid of the Yellow Bush Lupine, a nonnative in Washington. Fizzie, however, has identified it as a color variety of Bush Lupine. These were photographed near the beach below Fort Worden near Port Townsend, Washington.

I don't think it's a Lupine... IMO, it's a garden escapee --- compare to Baptisia 'Solar Flare'.
Regardless, the flowers are gorgeous and photographed very well =)

So I did more research on your plant here -- mainly 'cause not being able to ID it was driving me nuts -- and got a positive ID for you: Lupinus arboreus ↔ Bush Lupine. They're not common in your state, but are on the invasive species list in CA, so seeds carried by birds and such is a possibility. More rare than the plant itself in your state is the color.... I did find two examples of it in this color combo., though: A and B ....

So I was mistaken in my initial feeling that it wasn't a Lupine, for which I apologize! Sorry for the confusion.... Tough one to ID, though, it doesn't look like the quintessential Lupine flower. This variety readily crosses with other types of Lupine, though, which makes them even more fun to ID ;)

You've nailed it this time. I had another photo that showed some of the foliage and it was definitely a Lupine and I had Bush Lupine down as a possibility, but the color threw me off. Thanks for all the hard work.
