This is a very old scanned slide that I cam across a few days ago. It was taken in the spring of 1992 while on a road trip to see the spring wildflowers. shows both the Texas Bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas, and an Indian Paintbrush

When in Alaska for our 45th wedding anniversary in 2015, we spent several days in the Exit Glacier area of Kenai Fjords Naitonal Park. The photo is from our hike up the Harding Icefields trail there.

Texas hill country roadsides are a wildflower paradise in the spring and the most famous of the wildflowers is the Texas Bluebonnet, shown here. Driving through the hill country we stopped numerous times to take photos of the wildflowers.

When we were in Big Bend National Park earlier in the year we were too early for most of the wildflowers, but missed the busiest time in the park and missed the current health crisis. Some of the wildflowers we wanted to see were the Bluebonnets, a Lupine for which Texas and Big Bend are famous. We did not however see any of them blooming in the park. There were photographed near the two of study Butte where we spent our second night. We had supper at a very nice Mexican restaurant and then parked our car on some empty land nearby before driving back into the park the next day. The town of Study Butte is west of the park and we intended to explore the west side of the park the next day.

The Bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. The variety that grows in the Big Bend area is taller than other varieties and is the variety shown here. We looked for it in the park but did not see it there. These were photographed just outside the park to the west near the town of Study Butte.

These Big Bend Bluebonnets were photographed along the road near the town of Study Butte, Texas. They were the only Bluebonnets we found in flower while visiting Big Bend National Park.

Silvery Lupine

Because Crater Lake is at such a high elevation the wildflowers were just starting to bloom when we were there the middle of June. These Lupine were photographed along the road as we left the park and headed for the Oregon Lava Lands. I am not at all certain of the identification but am posting them as Silvery Lupine, Lupinus argenteus.

I find the many Lupine species of Washington difficult to identify, but believe this to be the Elegant Lupine, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus. It was photographed along the Old Blewett Road on the east side of the Cascades where it puts on quite a show early in the summer (see insets).

When we traveled through Blewett Pass on our Washington-Oregon-California trip recently, we found the wildflowers putting on a great show as they often do there, especially the Lupines, these, we believe, the Elegant Lupines, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus.

Among the Lupines we photographed in Blewett Pass along the Old Blewett Road, there were a number of plants with nearly white flowers, but they appear to me to be the Elegant Lupine, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus.

Water Drops

When I was out orchid-hunting the middle of May it was very wet and rainy on the east side of the mountains and I was rained out at one of the sites I visited. Traveling across the mountains and headed for western Washington, I stopped to photograph some wildflowers and discovered a fairyland of water drops, in this case on the leaves of a Velvet Lupine.

Bush Lupine

I had this identified as the Spur Lupine, Lupinus arbustus. The only other possibility I could come up with was a hybrid of the Yellow Bush Lupine, a nonnative in Washington. Fizzie, however, has identified it as a color variety of Bush Lupine. These were photographed near the beach below Fort Worden near Port Townsend, Washington.

Photographed along the Harding Icefields trail in Kenai Fjords National Park, I believe this is the Nootka Lupine, but if anyone knows better I'd appreciate a correction. I was not able to bring my wildflower books along because we were carrying everything in our backpacks and I forgot to check the number of leaflets when I photographed this.

Taken along the trail as we climbed from the Swift Creek basin up to Lake Ann. The photo looks back down the valley through which we hiked. The flowers are Mountain Heliotrope, Valeriana sitchensis and Arctic Lupine, Lupinus latifolius.

This is another photo of what I believe is identified correctly as the Subalpine Lupine, Lupinus arcticus. It was photographed along the Deer Park Road in Olympic National Park.
