South Dakota, December, 1980

South Dakota, December, 1980
At my grandparents' ranch. Dad, just another day of shoveling snow. The back rooms of the house were built into the bank for additional warmth in winter, cooling in summer. It was demolished by new owners about 25 years ago. I've placed the photo where the house used to be.

I remember that year very well, Diane. The snow even got up to the height of roadside hedges in England, and we had temperatures of -26C .
A nice clean cut to the front door. :-)

Wow, that was some serious snow! Winters these days aren't what they used to be....

They certainly aren't. I hate managing tasks in snow, but it's crucial for the water supply the rest of the year. Danke, Gudrun!

Like Amelia I remember this winter too. Cornwall, which doesn't have much snow normally, was totally cut off. A cousin gave birth while the car was stuck in a snowdrift; the car couldn't get through to the hospital!
I remember that I also had a shirt just like your Dad's at one time!

Diane Putnam club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Wow, I can't imagine the anxiety your cousin (and anyone else in the car) felt in that situation! Ah, the shirt...he was, until the day he died, the Ambassador of Plaid Shirts. Ha! I hope you enjoyed yours, too!

When I lived near Niagara Falls we had a blizzard in 1977. The drifts went up to the second floor windows of one side of the house and there was a drift about 8 feet high across the road. Eventually a massive snowblower truck came and cut a slot that the cars could drive through.
It was interesting when I was a kid but now I live in Phoenix and I can't say I miss the cold and snow !!

Diane Putnam club has replied to 1971 Dodge Charger R… club
Wow, that is DEEP snow country up there. It's the drifting that causes the biggest hazard, isn't it? I can't believe I've moved back to snow country to retire. There is something wrong with me! ;-o

He was. He loved doing hard physical work more than anyone I've ever known, but no wonder, since he grew up that way! I did not get that characteristic - lol!

Historically, it's blizzard country with huge drifts, but I don't know what it's like now. I imagine that Manitoba and Saskatchewan are the same. Weather isn't what it used to be, anywhere on the globe, of course. Merci!

Ha, ha...........back in the days you could leave school at 15. Not allowed now of course (the school leaving age was raised to 16 in 1972 I think). We were called Boy Seamen and our year of basic training at HMS Ganges, at Shotley near Ipswich, included 4 hours of English and Maths a day!

All the times I lived in the north was in coastal places where the snow never stayed stacked so nicely -- and we didn't usually have that much.
Diane Putnam club has replied to Don Barrett (aka DBs…
I've seen it that way on Hwy 140 to Medford and on the highway to Crater Lake even higher. No, certainly not the coast. If Klamath Falls has more than 8" it's a big deal.

The one time I saw snow that deep, dry, and stable, was in Lassen in the early summer when the roads had just opened: www.flickr.com/photos/donbrr/5545548151
