Pears in the dark

Didnt have a single one this year

Yep... lots of flowers ... NO late frost... not a single fruit set on the pear tree.. nor the peach tree. The Peaches the racoons get (I share nicely !) but nothing set .

Last year.. tree was groaning(thankfully still have some in the freezer) This year.. the pollinators didnt turn up till about 6 weeks ago !

Oh no! That's awful, the bees on this continent are declining and sounds like they've lost their sense of timing.

Our European pears are not so round ...

We do have two types that are quite round: Bartlett, seen above, and the much more delicious Comice. We have other varieties, one is French. It is indeed long and narrow, but I don't remember the name of it!

In the UK, we have the two you mention in the main stores and Williams and Conference, one of which I think ot the long french one, I forget which. There are still a few specialist farms/orchard that have rare varieties but these are disappearing fast, sadly. I like your shot. YS.

Thanks, Andy! I just thought of the D'Anjou and the Red Bartlett. I could be ambitious and look up just which is a French pear, but...hmm...I'm thinking perhaps the D'Anjou. ; )
