Bugsworth Basin

Bugsworth Basin
A walk along the canal is on promise today as we explore the peak Forest Canal for about 5km in both directions starting from here, its terminus. See PiP for alternative view.

Bugsworth Canal Basin on the Peak Forest Canal, and not far from the town of Whaley Bridge, was once the largest and busiest inland port on the narrow canal system and the only one to survive intact.

John FitzGerald, Eva Lewitus, David G Johnson, MaggsMep and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

It is a fine stretch from here and this Basin, so full of history was fascinating. Unfortunately we missed two detours that would have made things even better. Not far from the canal and almost in sight from us on the canal is the Torrs Riverside Park and Millennium walkway described as a Not-to-be-missed 175-yard aerial walkway spanning a cliffside above the River Goyt and we also missed a nearby reservoir. A great pity as we did a relatively repetitive 7 mile walk along here. Ah well maybe anther time.

A beautiful location, especially on a sunny day. It must be a lovely walk along the canal Herb.

Very nicely composed and taken, with an interesting PiP as a bonus. Super work my friend.

A great shot Herb,. capturing lots of interest,. I always marvel at the engineering that goes into the building of canals years ago,..planning the route itself - overflows and top up supplies from rivers to cater for all conditions - all had to be worked out... Keep well - and Cheers' from > Dj.

Glad you liked this David. Yes, our canals where quite marvellous as main transportation routes. The basin would have been a real hub of activity.

Best Wishes. Herb
