The Broken Road

The Broken Road
Our short trip to the county of Derbyshire sets us outside the village of Castleton and the Mam Tor ridge of the Peak District.

Up to 1979 this was the A625 road west of Castleton. This section was built on shale and loose ground below Mam Tor, known locally as the 'shivering mountain'.

Landslips occurred causing periodic closures of the road to repair the damage. Eventually it was decided that the road could not be economically repaired and it was permanently closed to traffic.

Enjoy the day.

I remember driving up here in the 1960s. Mam Tor has definitely earned its local name since then!

Hi Pete. I have a feeling that I once drove up there too. Now you can just about do this on a mountain bike perhaps. An exciting little walk up and down though.

It is Maggs, as many people park on the old good part of the road somewhat below here then use this to get to the Mam Tor path itself.

Die Straße wurde zwar nicht repariert, dafür blieb aber ein interessantes Fotomotiv erhalten.

Hi Gordon. I think that I have driven along here in the old days too, going up to MamTor and the Blue John mines. Just an interesting walk nowadays.

I’m old enough to have actually driven the road and even when it was still open it often had traffic lights and single line traffic - just as not far to the North the Snake Pass now has at Ashop. Prompting all the discussion about that roads future.

Yes it was a popular road in its time. Like Toz and myself, we codgers remember the day!

I heard about the possibility of the Snake Pass being closed recently. That would kill day trips to places like Dewent Reservoir and Castleton for me. It would make it a great walking path though!

There are rocks that have little elasticity.
They break easily.
Great details and images, Herb

Hi Judite. In actual fact, the land slipped away here underneath the road and so no matter what the road was built with, it would have collapsed. Glad you found it to your interest.

Best Wishes. Herb

An interesting pair of photos Herb, with an equally interesting narrative. The collapsed road has certainly created a new landmark for the area..........whether that's good or bad I have no idea!

Yes, a most interesting stretch of road to explore here. Its been unusable for some years now. I suppose man's impact on the landscape is rarely good! Glad it caught your interest.
