This is a new plant to me. The flowers are pretty. Thanks to Andy for identifying it. We have purple loosestrife here in Mississippi, which is considered a weed.

We have both in the UK. The purple one I found mainly in marshy areas on clifftops in Cornwall and elsewhere - growing in the wild. The yellow variety I have more often seen in gardens.

Thank you, Andy, great information. I have photographed wildflowers in Michigan for 40 years and have never seen it. Yesterday I noticed it around a small pond in an otherwise natural setting. I wonder if someone from Europe brought seeds from a trip and planted them there.

I have identified other loosestrife species, but also never saw this one in 40 years of photographing wildflowers in Michigan.

Sometimes it is baffling how a variety suddenly springs up in an unexpected place. Yes, humans are often the (unintentional, or even intentional!) agents, but birds, and even extreme weather, can be implicit too!
