These are not brake horse power, but boiler horse power. One boiler horsepower = 9.8125 kW. Also, I think the description incorrectly lists the power of the engines in BHP, but they are actually 8560 kW.

I'm reading this with interest. Thanks to both of you, Volker and Ron, for your contribution to this photo. Rarely do I meet anyone that has any interest in freighters, much less knows about engines moving these steel 'buckets' through the Great Lakes.

Agree with you that 1 boiler horse power is almost 1 kW, but boiler HP concernes to steam engines (boilers) only. As far as I understand Doerthe this ship is equipped with Diesel engines. So during my studies as a mechanical engineer we used to calculate with break horse powers for all types of motors.
But I dont mind to accept that the 2 motors in question do have 8560 kW each :-)

I believe you are correct, Volker. I became obsessed with boiler hp which confused my calculations. The smallest of this series of engines produces 6000 kW and the largest 9450 kW. Do you know the source of the large amount of steam in the exhaust?

Regret, but havent seen such a huge white smoke on ships, and I have seen a lot of large freight ships here in Hamburg harbour. So may be they have to use in US or Canada very clean Diesel with regard to environment protection .
