Weiblicher Hirschkäfer

It's a good close up Ronald, I wonder if this beetle bought about the trees demise or acts like a vulture and feasts on the remains.

Thanks, Maurice. I have decided I don't know what species this is. I suspect it eats something in rotten logs. There are other, much smaller, beetles here that live under the bark of pine trees and kill them. I can hear something chewing inside pine trees on quiet summer days.

Ein weiblicher Hirschkäfer; einen Hirschkäfer zu finden war in der Kindheit etwas ganz Besonderes. Ich mochte sie sehr, vor allem die mit Geweih.

Vielen Dank für die Identifizierung dieses Käfers Ingrid. Ich stelle mir ein kleines Mädchen vor, das ungewöhnliche Kleinigkeiten im Wald sucht.

I found your beetle in Simon & Schuster Guide to Insects. It is an Odontotaenius disjunctus, or Peg beetle. The 'short bent horn' is clearly visible and gives away who/what it is. This is the only species in the US, although there are many related Peg beetles in the tropics.
