I found your beetle in Simon & Schuster Guide to Insects. It is an Odontotaenius disjunctus, or Peg beetle. The 'short bent horn' is clearly visible and gives away who/what it is. This is the only species in the US, although there are many related Peg beetles in the tropics.

Belated thanks for that info, Dörthe. I just had a conversation with "meadowmom" who says there are people in lumber mills whose job is to listen for these things.
