I'm afraid there won't be any tales of seagull chicks this year as my neighbours had just about had enough of being dive bombed by worried "gull parents", so they have put the humane plastic spikes up there on my roof in between the chimneys. I do fully understand why they've done so - I just feel so guilty because the seagulls keep going up there and look at the spikes and start cawing as if to say "Where do we go now?" We moved into this house in 1959 - 60 years ago and I remember gulls making their nests in between the chimneys even then and I suppose it's imprinted on their brain that this is their home - now they've been usurped!!! I know they'll find somewhere else to go, but they have to find some place where they aren't going to be the interlopers and encroaching on someone else's territory. There are large cliffs about 2 miles away (as the crows fly) so they could find somewhere there to have their chicks, but I still feel guilty. Which I shouldn't because it wasn't me who put those spikes up there - and they're wild birds, so they aren't even mine. Oh put me down as a silly old woman!!!
Those are the chimneys on the top of my house - I have two more which served the fires in the kitchen and one of the bedrooms. Even though there are only a couple of fires open now - the two front chimneys are the ones for the fire in my lounge and the one in the other lounge which is now my bedroom. The other two are the chimneys belonging to the two defunct fires in the two other bedrooms. So no Winking, Blinking and Nod - no Stupid - no Silly Billy - and no Jonathon Livingstone Seagull - such a shame. At least it'll mean we won't have gull poo all over the drive, car and outside furniture!!!!
So no more seagulls - bon voyage mes petits.
Jenny McIntyre club has replied to GracieI can fully understand where the neighbours are coming from; they're noisy, dirty birds and as you say, there are cliffs not so far away which really is where they should nest.
In my previous street a neighbour had a warning from the council because she was putting bread on her shed roof which was attracting seagulls. They were a real pain and we couldn't hang washing out until she stopped.
Jenny McIntyre club has replied to Bee OrchidTrue they can use the cliffs which normal gulls do.
Have a nice weekend.
