Desert flower

12 Dec 2023 23 14 220
Today it struck me that I posted few flower images when I did the big outback trip earlier this year. This little flower was growing on the top of a large sand dune near Birdsville in western Queensland. I think it's a Butterfly bush (Petalostylus labicheoides).

At the Royal

Since some of my ipernity friends saw the Royal Hotel (see PiP) they have been keen to stay there. We're looking here into the Ladies' Lounge, complete with fireplace, where I'm sure they will be very comfortable. :-) For everyone else, Happy Wall Wednesday and have a great week.

The Royal Hotel

The (former) Royal Hotel, built in 1883, was one of three hotels in Birdsville. It transferred to the Australian Inland Mission for use as a hospital from 1923 until 1937, then it was used as a private residence for some years. More extensive background information in the PiP. Happy Fence Friday, everyone, have a great weekend.

Flying benches

This Cessna 210 has benches for six. I'm happy to report that mine was comfortable. This was taken just after returning from a dawn flight over the remote Channel Country (with flooding rivers when we were there) and the edge of the Simpson Desert. The PiP was taken as we took off into the dawn, with the Birdsville buildings in silhouette - more from the flight soon. Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a great week to follow.

Birdsville welcome

If you're contemplating a visit to the outback, this sign at Birdsville welcomes you and lists the monthly events from April to September (it's too hot other times). If you attend any "what's on", though, you are likely to meet crowds (see the PiP for numbers!).

Birdsville

Welcome to Birdsville, one of Australia's more iconic remote townships with (as shown in the PiP) a population of about 115 (+/- 7,000) depending on whether an "event" (such as the Birdsville Races) is happening. Best viewed large. Taking the lead of the people sitting outside, I'll wish everyone a very Happy Bench Monday and a great week to come.
