This is the stoker at work on the "PS Pevensey", on which we cruised the Murray. It still has its original steam engine from 1911, using wood as fuel. In the PiPs, more views of the engine which is fully open to viewing by passengers (behind fences). Finally, a view of the paddle wheel operating, visible through a porthole. Early on our river cruise we had passed the "Emmylou" at her moorings (PiP 1). Not long afterward she came past us, heading up the river under full steam (PiP 2).

She was built for the cruise market and is the only stern-wheeler of which I'm aware on the Murray. The Australian paddle steamers were all side-wheelers, such as the "Marion" (see PiP), based in Mannum and well over a century old.

The paddle ship "Jandra" offers tourist cruises on the Darling River at Bourke. Built very much in the traditional style of Australian side-wheelers, she is actually quite new. Texture "text_275" by ShadyMedusa-stock at deviantart has added quite a few years. :) Shown for comparison in the note, the "PS Marion" is over a century old. HFF. Explored.
