Snares Penguins

29 Jan 2015 34 23 691
Snares Penguins on the rock slope of the Snares Islands, close to sea level where we were floating by in zodiacs. Snares Penguins are unique to the Snares Islands. They have quite a climb from here to their rookeries at the top of the slope (see other image, also in inset). This image finalises my sub-Antarctic series. Try this on black. Explored.

Penguin Slope

The "Penguin Slope" seems to be famous among penguin enthusiasts and New Zealanders, but I feel it deserves wider awareness. The main rookeries of the Snares Penguins are in the shrubbery at the top of these steep rock slopes.

Nesting Buller's Albatross

At the Snares Islands, to the south of New Zealand, we were fortunate to see these nesting Buller's Albatross, as we followed the shore in our zodiac. View large. Explored.

Cape Petrel

The Snares are a small rocky uninhabited island group, south of New Zealand. We did not land there (not permitted) but visited by zodiac. This is a Cape Petrel, found around the Southern Ocean region and sometimes slightly further north.
