Echuca Wharf

23 Apr 2023 38 33 292
The Murray is Australia's major inland river and was once the main inland freight route, using paddle steamers - now operating for tourists. This is the wharf at Echuca, the main port for northern Victoria, with the height of the wharf reflecting the need to continue operating at varying river levels (see also PiP). The paddle steamers had to be relatively small with shallow draft, to allow operation during drought (and even then many became stranded until rivers again rose). Yes, there are benches on the top deck of the wharf and on the paddle steamer. Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to come.

Murray flood

I don't normally post others' photos, but my sister-in law Jan has kindly provided these for posting, as this is several days' drive away from where I live. These two images (see also PiP) are of current flooding near Mannum, a town on the lower reaches of the Murray River in South Australia. The river is not normally visible in the locations of either of these images, it's usually toward the hills in the distance of this image. Sorry, but I can't get the map link to work. To give some idea of the extent of the river and the size of Australia, these same floodwaters were causing major problems in eastern Australia back in mid-October and only now are reaching their peak here. This is the largest flood to reach Mannum in over 50 years and will continue for at least several weeks. Come to a point, at present Australia is having extreme floods right across the country, which can be linked to climate change..

Evening departure

A late afternoon departure for the "Murray Princess" a tour boat on the lower reaches of the Murray River. She was built for the cruise market on the river.

The waiting Princess.

Waiting for the passengers to arrive. The "Murray Princess" is a tour boat on the lower reaches of the Murray River. She was built for the cruise market and is the only stern-wheeler of which I'm aware on the Murray. The Australian paddle steamers were all side-wheelers, such as the "Marion" (see PiP), based in Mannum and well over a century old.

The bridge

Historic lifting bridge over the Murray River, scheduled for replacement as it was not built for modern traffic volumes or large trucks. The Murray is part of Australia's major river system and separates NSW and VIctoria, which leads to a thought for a musical link. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone. Explored.

And away she goes!

The "business end" of the paddle steamer "Murray Princess" (see inset note) as it leaves the Mannum wharf, taking another group of passengers along the Murray River in South Australia. Better viewed on black. Explored.

Sunset on the Murray

Substantial escarpments follow the lower Murray River: and come to life at sunset. Stitched panorama. (Larger version in note).

Small Murray River paddle steamer

It's great that real paddle steamers still operate on the Murray. Explored.
