White-eared Honeyeater

29 Aug 2013 6 9 683
An uncommon visitor.

Yellow-faced Honeyeater

25 Aug 2013 5 8 788
These lovely birds were regular seasonal visitors, returning each year to nest in a nearby wattle tree. They sang beautifully, though it doesn't show in the photo. :)

Port Lincoln Parrot (Ringnecked)

The long-tailed parrots come in a spectrum of varieties. This particular version is found in the Eyre Peninsula area. An old shot, copied across from the other site.

Pelican reflections

Where there are fish in Australia, there almost certainly are Australian Pelicans! Another shot copied across from the other site.

White cockatoo arrival

30 Aug 2013 22 16 820
These large birds, also known as Sulphur-crested cockatoos, were common visitors. They become quite tame (and often are kept as pets) but can be very destructive.

Yellow-Rumped Thornbill

29 Aug 2013 5 3 633
Commonly found flitting around when we had our property in the mountains.

Yellow Thornbill

24 Aug 2013 8 8 787
When we lived in the mountains, it was difficult photographing these little thornbills: not only were they small, but they rarely sat long enough, constantly flitting. Fortunately they were nearly always around, so there were plenty of opportunities.

Flame Robin

These were annual visitors around our house in the bush.

Brush wattlebird feeding

24 Aug 2013 9 15 1134
Brush Wattlebird enjoying a meal of nectar from a Banksia flower spike. With the Pentax, the focal length needs to be entered for manual lenses - I forgot to change it for this shot with the 100mm from earlier use with a 50mm, hence the wrong FL shown in the EXIF info.

gone.. # 4 of sequence

Piracy wins! Don't argue with rainbow lorikeets. :)

Out of there! #2 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 11 12 673
Contrary to appearances, the galah is not attacking the rainbow lorikeet, just the opposite. The lorikeet has dived in at high speed, making the galah leap backwards from the feeder. Lorikeets are often very aggressive when food is involved.

Not so fast! # 3 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 15 17 804
Overcoming its surprise, the larger galah tries to stand its ground against the rainbow lorikeet. But it's game, set and match when a moment later a second lorikeet arrives (see Shot #4).

Galah portrait. #1 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 8 18 654
One of a family of galahs that regularly come to our bird feeder. This one was kindly posing for the camera until, to its surprise and mine, a hungry rainbow lorikeet arrived (next shot).

Rainbow lorikeets feeding

These lorikeets were feeding in our neighbour's yard. They become quite tame.

All about maps

19 Sep 2012 392
I've rummaged through old papers and found this route map we used during our 1966 trip. The mountains had been aerially photographed in the 1950s-early 60s: our job was to accurately map their locations. The insert on the newer background map (1989) shows our route and the peaks mapped

View from Pak Ou Caves

13 Jun 2013 6 6 647
Upstream from Luang Prabang there is an impressive view across the Mekong River to the village of Pak Ou from the caves of that name. In the caves there are huge numbers of Buddha statues - some extremely old.

Indochine

10 Jun 2013 5 2 513
Luang Prabang was one of the provincial capitals in French Indochina. The old "Indochine" is still easily found in many of the old colonial style buildings in this lovely World Heritage listed town.

New Holland Honeyeater

10 Jun 2013 6 5 776
This New Holland honeyeater was eating nectar from these neighbouring shrubs. I was bemused by the orange patch on its forehead until I realised it is pollen. RMC Tokina 200/3.5 + Kenko X1.4 TC.
