View of Perth from the hotel balcony, on an overcast early morning. Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, everyone.

From Rottnest

Looking across the Indian Ocean from Rottnest Island to Perth, Western Australia. I was taken by the nearby waves on one of the adjoining reefs.

A new bridge across the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. To the right a newly erected sporting stadium.

Across Perth

Looking across Perth from Kings Park. With another Friday here, I'll use this to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend.

Bench at the Quay

18 Sep 2022 24 19 205
The view from this bench in Elizabeth Quay in Perth is very pleasant, but what took my interest was the annotation on the stonework alongside - as shown in the PiP. This apparently is a historical reference. The Swan River in Perth is now tidal, but I understand that, until the late 1800s, a rock bar across the entrance limited the water in the river to the outflow from the nearby ranges, so with a relatively dry climate the water level would have normally been much lower in those days. Happy Bench Monday, everyone, and have a good week.

Car club gathering

17 Sep 2022 30 17 264
While I was in Perth, a friend there arranged a meeting of Perth members of the Renault 4CV Register of Australia, which began with the Renault 4CV (at right) and now also encompasses all the derivatives of the 4CV - including those in the PiPs. In this photo, next left is an early (round headlight) R10, then a brightly coloured Dauphine and a blue 4CV, with an R4L completing the line.

Night fence

It was a pleasure to find that the spectacular Elizabeth Quay pedestrian bridge in Perth features equally striking lighting. Good large on black. Happy Fence Friday and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Elizabeth Quay

14 Sep 2022 15 8 151
Perth's "Elizabeth Quay" development, opened in 2016, is a mix of an artificial inlet, artworks (see separate posting on the "SPANDA" sculpture at right) and commercial developments of various kinds. Although it seems the development caused local controversy at the time, I must say I found the area very pleasant.

Adnate Mural

10 Sep 2022 26 18 290
There's an Australian hotel chain adding murals to their buildings, in this case giving the hotel the name of the artist - Tim Adnate. The 25 storey mural is one of the world's largest - you can read more about it here.

The Royal

08 Sep 2022 38 34 250
Back in the late 1800s, any self-respecting new hotel in Australia had to have cast iron latticework around the upper deck. The Royal Hotel in Perth dates from 1882 and the double layer of ironwork is unusual. From the pub's website, it seems this was Perth's "happening" place back in the day! HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Reflecting on Perth

07 Sep 2022 33 24 339
One thing that struck me in Perth was that quite a few of the old buildings have survived the rush to build glass towers, unlike some other Australian cities. For my money, the city is the better for it. For interest, in this shot, the sunlight on the older building is being reflected from the building nearer me.

Australasian Darters

06 Sep 2022 29 17 228
Seen drying their feathers on the banks of the Swan River in Perth. Darters resemble cormorants, but among the more visible differences is the lack of a hook on the beak. This is a male, in the PiPs are several images of the females - the females being distinguished by lighter colouring. These are found around most of Australia (apart from some of the dryer regions).

Relaxing at the Quay

04 Sep 2022 29 19 302
Still in Perth at Elizabeth Quay, where a number of people were relaxing in the very pleasant sunny weather. HBM and have a great week, everyone.

Perth sunrise

Perth sunrise viewed from the hotel where I stayed, part of the Swan River at right. Good on black.

Elizabeth Quay Bridge

01 Sep 2022 44 38 319
It was fascinating to visit Perth, in Western Australia, and to see the changes about 25 years after my previous visit. One area which really appealed was Elizabeth Quay and its interesting pedestrian and cycle bridge. Happy fence Friday everyone, and have a great weekend.
