Moruya River

It was a lovely winter's day today. These benches are overlooking the Moruya River. Happy Bench Monday and best wishes for the coming week, everyone.

Georgina River

It's hard to imagine that the floods we encountered further south near Birdsville were here a few months earlier. This waterhole makes the river look larger, but it was taken from the crossing shown in the PiP which gives a better idea of the real size.

Goodbye!

The barge removing some of the last remaining concrete piles from the old bridge. The old bridge (opened in 1956) now has totally disappeared. (Best viewed large on black). Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

After the bath

My previous series showed the elephant being given a wash and the attendant then jumping off. Which left the elephant in the river alone! With the bathing over, it's time for this well trained elephant to get out. See the images below (also in PiPs). The position shown on the map is approximate to the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos.

Cleaning your elephant

17 Oct 2020 43 26 342
Elephant cleaning is one of those jobs needing to be done from time to time. This elephant was being cleaned in the river near our guest house. As you will see, the procedure is to add some sandy mud, then rub with one of your thongs (flip-flop to some of you). The next steps are in the PiPs and also below (I've worked out that PiPs are not visible on mobile phones - mine at least).

Bolaven Plateau waterfall

This waterfall is on the Bolaven Plateau, in southern Laos. Best viewed large. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend, but first of all HFF everyone.

A day's outing

18 Jul 2020 34 23 300
Yesterday, Pauline and I went for our first purely recreational day's outing in the past twelve months. We travelled up into the ranges, to one of our favourite places on the Shoalhaven River in the Deua National Park. Thankfully, although the fires earlier this year had caused vast damage to most of the forests through which we passed, this area had been preserved. I would have liked to take a walk to a feature called "The Big Hole", but the water was over the stepping stones and too cold for me to consider fording through. Explored.

Mekong boats

A friendly wave from the passenger on this boat as we passed on the Mekong. As everywhere, there is quite a diversity in the boats on the river - see PiPs.

North Head, Moruya

29 Jan 2020 26 18 467
Today, while Pauline had her treatment, I took a short drive to the breakwater at the North Head of the Moruya River. While there, a helicopter passed overhead with a fire-fighting water bucket and filled it nearby (see PiP), en route to the adjacent bushfires. Explored.

By the river

My lovely wife began her out-patient oncology treatment today in this hospital, delightfully sited near the Moruya River. Explored. My involvement on ipernity will be limited for some time, so my apologies if I do not respond to your comments or visit your images - I shall try to do so as far as possible.

Laos river

24 Jul 2018 21 14 687
Feeling awful tonight, on the dreadful news of the loss of hundreds of people in Laos after the failure of a partly-built dam. I was fortunate to visit the country a few years ago and to meet some of its lovely people. This was taken at a resort stay not far from the site of this disaster, with (if I recall correctly) the Tad Fane falls in the distance.

Evening departure

21 Apr 2018 24 14 500
A late afternoon departure for the "Murray Princess" a tour boat on the lower reaches of the Murray River. She was built for the cruise market on the river.

The waiting Princess.

Waiting for the passengers to arrive. The "Murray Princess" is a tour boat on the lower reaches of the Murray River. She was built for the cruise market and is the only stern-wheeler of which I'm aware on the Murray. The Australian paddle steamers were all side-wheelers, such as the "Marion" (see PiP), based in Mannum and well over a century old.

Three Gorges Dam

25 Nov 2017 17 11 629
The massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is the largest hydroelectric power generator in the world, though not without a variety of negative issues. Best viewed large.

Day out at the dam

We were in China for their summer holidays, and this was taken on a weekend, so picnic areas were popular.

The old tower

16 Nov 2017 33 25 913
An old clock tower, now dwarfed by newer buildings in Chongqing. Taken while heading off down the Yangtze River for a few days. Best viewed large. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone. Explored.

The bridge

14 Nov 2017 29 19 845
The massive bridge across the Yangtze River at Chongqing. The upper deck is roadway, the lower deck is railway. Explored.

Near the city

There can't be too many cities with cliffs nearby that are suitable for rock climbing and abseiling! After a day at work, it now seems a popular way for many to relax in Brisbane (see also the note). View large. On the subject of rocks, a parting link to one the greatest rockers. Explored. Help save ipernity - www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186760
